God, Sreenu & Me
2001 DOCUMENTARY
Enlightenment is like an eel: slippery and elusive. In God Sreenu and Me, film-maker Stewart Main chases it through alleys and up mountains all over India. He meets people seeking immortality on the way, but it his battle with his own demons and angels that provide the storyline.
This is a cinematic documentary: an exploration of spirituality in the 21st century, through the eyes of the experimental and philosophical Main, who delves into the shadows as easily as he plays in the light. He is looking for God, but is happily distracted by sex, death, love and life.
However it isn't all lofty philosophy.
When asked what he's looking for, Main captures the essence of everyone's life Journey: Somewhere nice to live, some work to earn some money and someone special in your life.
"hyperhilarious, brilliant and touching" Jane Bowron, NZ Evening Post
"a boldly narcissistic piece in which Stewart Main goes to India looking for God and ends up mainly exploring the interior of his trousers"
Diana Wichtel, NZ Listener
"ironic, playful and true" John Hughes, Australian Metro Magazine
